In this illustration, created for Mass General Magazine, a strand of DNA from a tumor cell reveals a genetic abnormality (glowing starburst). Using fluorescence to analyze cells with genetic abnormalities in a technique called FISH (blue background shapes with colorful speckling) and mutation-detection by DNA sequencing, the MGH Cancer Center Molecular Pathology Translational Research Laboratory is helping to guide therapeutic decisions to treat a vast array of tumors, as depicted here in various organs.
